SILVER ALPHA
Shifters of Blackwell Pass
by Mila T. March
My wolf perks up the moment I open the door. Jagger Riggs was the last person I expected to come into the vet clinic during my shift. I hadn’t seen him in years, and I was just there to watch over the inpatients through the night.
He doesn’t acknowledge knowing me. He’s covered in blood and cursing careless drivers on the highway. I put in a call to my supervisor, but we can’t wait for the vet, who is attending a difficult birth on a ranch miles away, to get here. Someone else will come, but for now, I push the cart out to where Jagger has left his truck parked on the sidewalk. In the bed lies a badly injured buffalo calf. One that looks at me with big eyes, one that’s counting on me to keep it alive until the doctor gets here.
We work together to stabilize the animal, and, when we’ve done all we can, we sit and wait for the vet. I had a little crush on my father’s best friend back in the day. But that was only a flicker in my mind as we worked together to save the calf. My dad hates the idea of me becoming a vet. My mom is supportive but worries about me. But their concerns for long hours and the less joyful side of the work couldn’t overpower my love of animals and the need to help as many as I could.
Jagger is well-versed in taking care of his animals, so probably doesn’t come in often. He owns the sanctuary. It’s his life and breath.
Guess that doesn’t leave room for a mate half his age. Still, I can’t deny my need for him, the urge to press my lips to his full ones. Maybe I’m tired. No maybe about it, but not tired enough to let him know my thoughts.
A silver-haired wolf like Jagger belongs to no one. Especially not someone he can never see as more than the daughter of his friend.
