TAINTED MATE by Mazzy J. March
They say I’m tainted, that I have bad blood because my mother ran away when she was young and returned pregnant with me. She died at my birth, never telling anyone who my father was. But they know—or claim they do. They say my mother was besmirched by a member of a rival pack who was subsequently found slaughtered by hunters just outside our lands.
My auntie, who reared me as her own, swore my mother loved my father, and she had doubts about how he died. I could read them in her eyes when the males brought up the topic, even if she never voiced them. They warn the young about hunters, although that was the only time we suffered a loss from it.
But when my only ally dies, I overhear a plan to give me away to another pack, to be a second mate to a cruel older male in exchange for a sack of hallucinogenic fungi that grew wild on their land. Insulting and terrifying. I’ve never even hoped for a mate, being told by everyone but my auntie that I was a waste of pack resources. And I’d rather live alone than accept their choice for me.
